This will be a great day enjoying the beauty of the Owyhees and the impressive capability of our Rivians! This loop starts on gravel/dirt roads and features a series of mildly increasing off-road technicality.
The Plan:
•
Everyone should charge to 100% the night before.
•
Anyone with a "Standard" battery or folks traveling from 50+ miles away may want to arrive 30+ minutes early and charge at either:
•
Loop Charger at Canyon Creek Gardens, 20087 Lowell Rd, Caldwell, ID 83607
•
Tesla Supercharger, US-95 #909, Jordan Valley, OR 97910
•
8:00am Meet at Marsing Island Park, 101 1st Ave W, Marsing, ID 83639
•
8:30am Depart Marsing and drive 21 miles south to the turn onto McBride Creek Rd.
•
A few miles in there’s a good pull off spot to air down our tires. It’s not needed to travel to Leslie Gultch, it’s just a washboard dirt road, but airing down does make the trip smoother, and why not, we might as well flex our on board air compressors.
•
Drive all the way to the boat ramp at the end of Leslie Gulch Rd. There’s a pit toilet at the small campground there if anyone is in need at that point. After we look around for a minute those who are interested in a day hike and more can traverse back to the Juniper Gulch Trailhead 4 miles back up the road. This is the first opportunity for members to split and head back home if they are not interested in a day hike or off-roading.
•
Take an easy day hike up Juniper Gulch. Even if you just do half a mile out and back it’s pretty neat. Lots of cool rock formations to check out, and a great destination with kids. Lots to explore. This is also the second bailout option for those not interested in off-roading, and/or cranky kids.
•
Those still with us and interested, we now leave Juniper Gulch and double back to the turn up to Three Fingers Gulch. The road is just a rough two track. 20” ATs are recommended, but it’s pretty tame, just take it slow. Three Fingers Gultch camp is a pretty destination, and a great overland camping destination. But it’s a small turn around. We can pause there at Three Fingers and look around before turning back.
•
Traverse from Three Fingers back across the Owhyees taking the overland route to Succor Creek Campground.
•
Succor Creek is the last break point, and also the next pit toilet opportunity. Those no longer interested in off-roading can take the easy road north. The rest of us will cut across the Owhyees.
The whole loop only comes out to 130 ish miles from the closest charger location at Canyon Creek Gardens. That should be plenty easy for even standard range trucks. But we’d still encourage people to fully charge up the night before.
