? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ About this event:
What can a short film help us discover about ourselves and each other?
While we don't typically host many virtual events outside of the height of the pandemic, we're making a small exception to participate in Project UnLonely Films, an initiative of the Foundation for Art & Healing that uses storytelling to raise awareness about loneliness and foster connection.
Every once in a while, we'll host a virtual gathering featuring one or two short films from the project. From dramas to comedies, live action to animation, these award-winning short films explore different aspects of the human experience, reminding us that we're not alone in what we feel and experience.
We'll watch two short films together over Zoom and then have an opportunity to discuss our reactions, reflections, and anything that resonated with us. There's no pressure to share anything personal, just an opportunity to enjoy a story, hear different perspectives, and connect with others.
Inspired by Project UnLonely's mission to reduce loneliness and strengthen social connection through the arts, these gatherings offer another way to build meaningful connections in our community.
🎬On Loneliness
By Michael Joseph McDonald and L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. Runtime: 6 minutes, 48 seconds
A poetic short film exploring how people with and without intellectual disabilities create belonging in a world marked by isolation.
Why we chose this film
“This film strikes an effective balance between educational and emotional storytelling, using diverse personal narratives to illuminate pathways from loneliness to connection. By uplifting the voices of people navigating disabilities, the film emphasizes ‘friendship across difference’ as a meaningful way to address the loneliness crisis.”
— Project UnLonely Films
🎬Pop Down
By James Button Runtime: 9 minutes
Struggling with a quarter-life crisis, Jess feels like there is no one in the world she can talk to. That is when Alun turns up at her window asking for a tour guide for his intergalactic holiday in Wales.
Why we chose this film
“This quirky, heartwarming short film uses a creative premise-an unexpected visit from an alien-to explore the loneliness of a young woman struggling with her mental health. We hope the film reminds viewers that even brief conversations with family, friends, neighbors, or strangers can strengthen our sense of belonging.”
— Project UnLonely Films
“We created Project UnLonely to help reduce the stigma and burden of loneliness by encouraging people to tap into outlets for creative expression. Today, it is more timely than ever as people around the world struggle with the impact of social isolation. We hope the UnLonely Film Festival offers viewers an opportunity to learn, laugh, cry, smile, and, most importantly, connect.”
— Dr. Jeremy Nobel, Founder & President of the Foundation for Art & Healing
Come as you are, enjoy a story, and leave feeling a little more connected.
